Ward 5 Councillor Dana Swigart
Number of years on Council: Four
Personal Background: My wife Barb and I moved to Ardmore from Calgary in 1978. We raised our two daughters, Jayme and Stacy, in Ardmore, and now have four grandchildren, two in Ardmore and two in Calgary. I enjoy keeping busy with family, grandchildren, automotive work, woodwork, cycling, and generally keeping fit. Barb and I both enjoy travelling. I studied Karate in both Cold Lake and Bonnyville, where I acquired a Black Belt after years of training. I am active on the Ardmore Volunteer Fire Department with 34 years of service, 15 years as Fire Chief.
Employment Background: I worked many jobs during my younger years in Calgary. The jobs ranged from construction in Calgary, to a lumber mill in Radium B.C., to seismic oil exploration from Southern Alberta to the Arctic, and then the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia. My career job was working for the Department of National Defence on 4 Wing Cold Lake at the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE). I was a civilian Data Project Engineering Technologist for 34 years, working on numerous flight test and systems test programs.
Reasons for Sitting on Council: I have always been active in the community. I was chairman of the Ardmore Community Society Board, the Ardmore School Parent Advisory Committee and the Municipal District of Bonnyville`s Rural Recreation Board prior to the M.D. hiring a full-time director to look after recreation. I am Chief of the Ardmore Volunteer Fire Department and have been for 15 years. I have a passion for volunteering and like to see improvement in all aspects of our quality of life. I have the time and energy to commit to the community, and therefore decided to run for Council. If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing well. I like to commit 100% to tasks and dislike incompetence. There is always room for improvement.
Term Goals & Priorities: I would like to see the M.D. provide more in terms of recreation throughout the M.D. This could consist of more green space parks and playground equipment in hamlets and new subdivisions. I would like to see investment in multi-use paved trails throughout the M.D. that can be used by youth, moms with strollers and seniors for cycling, walking and jogging. I would like to see Kinosoo Ridge Snow Resort become a year-round recreation park with the possibility of such things as zip lines, a skateboard park, a summer mountain bike park with use of the lifts, summer camping facilities, and a hotel and marina. I would like to see more investment in our campgrounds to provide what is requested by users. That could include more full or partial hookups, and sewer dump stations where required.
I wish to see more planned growth within the Hamlets and hope to see the M.D. support that growth.
I would like to look at controlling the property tax so that tax increases are not the norm.
I will work with Council to address the huge increase in rural crime. We can spearhead the implementation of a Rural Crime Watch program and work together with our Public Safety Officers and the RCMP.
I am open minded, energetic, and committed to listening to the concerns of all citizens in the Municipal District of Bonnyville to ensure that the M.D. does its best to deal with concerns of all residents. I will work with Council to ensure openness and transparency through open forums and Town Halls. Council meetings are for everyone.
