MUNICIPAL DISTRICT BONNYVILLE NO. 87

COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS July 13, 2022

Keeping you informed of the services, business, and development that affect YOU!

#1 Riverhurst Bin Site Update – Council approved establishing a bin site for residents in the Riverhurst area on a nearby M.D.-owned quarter section. Residents had been taking their waste to the Hilda Lake Landfill after the Riverhurst Hall Bin Site was closed earlier this year. Updates on the site will be posted on this site as they become available.

#2 Municipal Planning Decisions – Council approved two discretionary use permits for major home businesses — a trucking company and an antique store. Council also approved a five-acre subdivision from a previously subdivided agricultural quarter section. Details on the decisions can be found in the meeting agenda.

#3 Planning and Development Updates – From April to June, the Planning Department issued 48 building permits with a value of just over $5 million. There were also 121 Safety Codes permits issued, while seven new subdivision applications were received.
There will be an open house held in Cherry Grove July 27 to give residents a chance to give feedback on the updated draft of the hamlet’s Area Structure Plan. Keep an eye on our website for more information.
Council also received an update about ongoing M.D. Economic Development projects including meeting with local organizations while working toward a new website, economic development plan, and newsletter.

#4 Parks, Recreation & Culture Updates — Council heard that the remaining parts for the swing feature at the Kinosoo Ridge Aerial Adventure Park will soon be on the way from the German supplier. Watch kinosoo.ca for updates.
Work on the Moose Lake Trail has begun, with the brushing portion of the project now finished. Once the contractor has completed the trail, they will move to the Cold Lake M.D. Park to complete Loop C, which will see the addition of 15 power campsites and 10 non-power tenting sites.
Work is continuing on boat launch repairs, with Birch Grove finishing up July 15 before staff move to Pelican Point. Parks has received approval to do the upgrades to the Vezeau Beach boat launch and mooring system. The tender process is expected to begin soon. The department is planning to complete the project before freeze-up this year and anticipates it will be ready for use in 2023.
The warm-up shacks at the new outdoor ice rinks in Cherry Grove and Ardmore are on track to be completed by winter.
Public consultation for the Intermunicipal Trails Study has begun. The study is being done in cooperation with the City of Cold Lake. More information and a survey can be found at bit.ly/MDBvilleTrails.
Council directed Administration to reduce the number of rental picnic tables available for in-kind donation requests to 15, and to limit in-kind donation approvals (provided through the Donations, Sponsorship, and Recognition Policy) to registered not-for-profit groups and associations.

#5 Briefly – Council heard from the Cold Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce. Chamber president, Ryan Lefebvre discussed the upcoming Feast at the Beach event and various sponsorship opportunities. The second part of the Chamber’s presentation was from 143 Healthcare Consulting regarding new healthcare delivery models for primary care to maximize funding to support quality healthcare for the region. Council directed administration to bring back information about sponsorship and funding for both projects to a future Council meeting.
Council approved members to attend four upcoming events — the Cold Lake Chamber of Commerce July Business Mixer, the Dr. Margaret Savage Open House, the Lakeland Agricultural Research Association Field Tour, and the annual Alberta Coordinated Action for Recycling Enterprises (CARE) Conference in September.
