The Municipal District of Bonnyville has received formal notification from the City of Cold Lake regarding its intent to annex over 20 quarter sections of rural land surrounding the urban municipality.
Reeve Ed Rondeau says the notification of intent is the first step in a lengthy annexation process, which is managed by a provincial body called the Municipal Government Board. “Property owners within the proposed area will have plenty of opportunity to voice their views to both the City of Cold Lake and the M.D. of Bonnyville regarding annexation.”
The M.D. is hosting a public meeting at the Lakeland Inn Banquet Room in the City of Cold Lake on Tuesday, December 17 at 7 p.m. to discuss the annexation process and to hear the views of property owners within the affected area. The City of Cold Lake is also setting up a public consultation process for affected landowners.
Reeve Rondeau said the M.D. will enter into annexation negotiations with the City of Cold Lake once public consultations are completed. “The M.D. of Bonnyville Council recognizes the growth issues faced by all municipalities in the region and the need to plan for future demands. We believe that the two municipalities can reach an agreement regarding the proposed annexation which will benefit all stakeholders in the process.”
