Pelican Point, Moose Lake Area Wildfire Under Control UPDATE 9

June 7, 2019 (10:30 a.m.) – The Fire Ban and Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) restrictions have been lifted for the M.D. of Bonnyville No. 87, Summer Villages of Bonnyville Beach and Pelican Point and the Village of Glendon.

Range Road 474 is now open. Please drive cautiously - not only because of the crews from Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, but also due to some damage caused by heavy equipment that was used in fighting the fire. The Municipal District of Bonnyville is assessing the damage, and will repair it soon.

The boat launches on Moose Lake are now open to the public. The Municipal District of Bonnyville’s Pelican Point Park on Moose Lake is now open as well.

“The wildfire investigation is ongoing,” said BRFA Fire Chief Jay Melvin. “The fire was held to approximately 110 hectares in size. There were no injuries and no damage to infrastructure. The only damage was to the forest area.”

Melvin expressed his gratitude to local businesses and the community for the outpouring of support.

“We have a lot of volunteer firefighters, and we are grateful for the support of local businesses letting their employees respond to this fire. We’re also thankful for those firefighters’ families for their understanding, as well as residents who gave us room to work.”
