[ARCHIVED] Off Highway Vehicles causing concerns in the M.D.

May 21, 2021 — As the weather continues to warm and residents begin enjoying the outdoors, Municipal District of Bonnyville Peace Officers would like to remind residents of their requirements when operating Off Highway Vehicles (OHVs) in the M.D.

Municipal Bylaw No. 1447 allows for operators to use OHV’s in the ditches adjacent to M.D. roads only if the operator is, (a) travelling in the same direction as the highway, (b) not exceeding 20 km/h, and the OHV has proper registration and insurance on hand. Additionally, any damage caused by the use of OHV’s may be costed back to the registered owner of the vehicle in question.

The Traffic Safety Act and Off Highway Vehicle Act also impose fines and restrictions upon OHV operators. Recent complaints from the public, and observations from Peace Officers, indicate that not all OHV operators are observing these regulations. Fines, and the towing of offending vehicles, may take place when infractions are noted. M.D. Peace Officers operate regular patrols during the evening and on weekends.

Residents are encouraged to call 780-812-3332 if they observe anyone breaking the OHV bylaw. Please visit https://www.transportation.alberta.ca/documents/OHVHelmets-FAQ.pdf for further reference material.
