#1 Recycling Report 2020 – The Municipal District of Bonnyville runs a highly successful recycling program. Over 100,000 kg of cardboard was recycled in 2020 and slightly less than 20,000 kg of paper and plastic was kept out of the landfill. Electronic recycling numbers were slightly lower this year at 12,900 kg. Paint was way up, with 13,069 kg recycled. Household Hazardous Waste increased this year to 4,422.41 kg. The M.D.’s Tire Marshaling Program collected 127,900 kg. The M.D. nearly doubled its collection of mattresses with 25,974 kg. One hundred and twenty bales of grain bags were collected, weighing in at 24 tonnes. Propane tank collection was down in 2020 to 2,746 kg. Metal recycling is done every two years, with 1,051 tonnes collected in 2019. Approximately 10,000 tonnes of collected concrete will be crushed in 2021. The M.D. spent $58,826.64 on recycling in 2020 – $27,736 on mattresses, $27,782.39 on paint, household hazardous waste, and propane tanks, as well as $3,408.25 on household recyclables.
#2 Ag and Waste Update – The Shelterbelt Program was a huge success, with 9,000 seedlings delivered to residents. The 50 km of Roadside Brushing is out for tender and will begin in the fall. The Bridge and Guardrail Vegetation Program has started, with an August 31 completion date. Five hundred inspections have been completed for the Rat/Rabies Program. The 5,200 km of Roadside Mowing began on June 14. The five hamlets and 83 subdivisions are being mowed monthly. We will be inspecting Canola fields for the detection of Clubroot. The Weed Control Program will be doing 1,500 inspections this summer. The Ardmore Landfill Expansion work has started, with a July 30 completion date. Fifteen of the 21 groups have completed their Roadside Cleanups.
#3 Funding Support – Council approved a $1,000 contribution to the Cherry Grove Recreation & Agricultural Society for the 2021 Canada Day Fireworks Event to be funded from the 2021 Operational Budget. Fireworks start at dusk.
#4 Proclamation – Reeve Greg Sawchuk declared July 18-24 National Drowning Prevention Week. The Lifesaving Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories urges people to supervise children in and around water, refrain from behaviours that may result in intoxication while participating in aquatic activities, and wear a lifejacket when boating.
